About Our Programs

The therapeutic value of water has long been recognized to stimulate the body's healing process. Today, the additional benefits provided by hydrotherapy, including physical conditioning, cardiovascular fitness and social integration are becoming widely recognized.

San Joaquin Valley Rehabilitation Hospital offers both aquatic exercise and aquatic physical therapy programs to meet the needs of those with physical disabilities, as well as those who are interested in improving their overall physical condition.All programs take place in the only therapeutic pool in the Valley, maintained at a higher temperature (92-95 degrees) than typical fitness center pools. Our pool is four feet deep with a hand rail around the perimeter. A special lift chair is available to assist those in wheelchairs into the pool, and participants have access to a changing area, shower and locker facility.

Aquatic therapy or exercise programs may be beneficial to those with the following conditions:

  • Acute or chronic low back pain

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Prenatal/Postpartum

  • Acute injury

  • Gait/Balance

  • Pre/Post surgery (weight bearing restrictions)

  • Arthritis

  • Generalized weakness

  • Sports Injuries

Exercise or Therapy?

To determine which program, aquatic exercise or aquatic therapy, is right for you (or your patients), please review the following information.

þ Aquatic Physical Therapy

This program is for patients who require physical therapy but cannot tolerate a land-based program. Aquatic physical therapy is by physician prescription only. This is a medically directed program planned in consultation with your physician, a physical therapist and an aquatic rehabilitation specialist.

Initial evaluations are provided by a physical therapist and treatments provided by physical therapy assistant/aquatic rehabilitation specialist.

þ Aquatic Exercise - Community-Based Programs

Aquatic exercise programs are offered as part of our community fitness program, SJVR Fitness. Classes are conducted by fitness instructors, and are open to the community. Participants must be medically cleared by their physician to participate in an aqua aerobics program. Participants in this program do not receive therapy services. Rather, our aquatic exercise classes are for those who wish to improve their physical condition and cardiovascular fitness. We offer several classes, including:

  • Hydro Conditioning (Beginning and Intermediate): Classes consist of a low to moderate intensity exercise program that includes range of motion, flexibility, strengthening, and limited cardiovascular exercise. Each class is approximately 45 minutes.

  • Hydro Fitness (Advanced): Classes consist of water aerobics for cardiovascular conditioning and muscle strengthening. This class is geared toward participants with minimal or no physical limitations. Each class is approximately one hour.

  • Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program: Non-aerobic class designed by the Arthritis Foundation. Exercises focus on mobility and strengthening. Taught by an instructor who has been certified through the Arthritis Foundation.

  • Fibromyalgia: Numerous programs are offered that help treat the various symptoms brought on by Fibromyalgia. Warm water therapy is a useful means to treat or help manage Fibromyalgia. San Joaquin Valley Rehabilitation Outpatient Center offers one-on-one aquatic therapy sessions with a physical therapist or a structured, group exercise classes. Exercise helps to improve fitness and sleep. It also reduces pain and fatigue.

Aqua Mom’s & Mommy Fitness

What is Aqua Moms?

This aquatic exercise class is offered to expectant mothers or new mothers who are looking for a way to maintain good overall health during and following pregnancy. Aqua Moms is a comprehensive class including low-impact aerobic exercise with stretching, toning and range of motion activities for the whole body. You will receive instruction by a trained fitness professional.

Benefits of Aqua Moms

Water is a versatile medium that is used for resistance exercises and cardio-respiratory fitness resulting in increased metabolism and overall endurance. Because buoyancy supports a high percentage of the body’s weight and gives the feeling of lightness, pregnant women love the assistance the water affords them, especially during the later stages of pregnancy.

Exercise is a great way to keep your mind and body sharp. Aqua Moms at San Joaquin Valley Rehabilitation is an excellent and safe way to stay fit. It may help:

  • Give you energy

  • Reduce backaches, constipation, bloating and swelling

  • Improve your posture

  • Enhance muscle tone, strength and endurance

  • Help you sleep better

  • Reduce stress

  • Decrease swelling

  • Decreased delivery complications

  • Reduction in length of labor

  • Possible prevention of Gestational Diabetes

  • Reduction of insulin need in those with Gestational Diabetes

  • Return to pre-pregnancy weight quicker

  • Reduced risk of pre-eclampsia

Under no circumstance is this class designed to help you lose weight while you are pregnant.

Absolute Contraindications

  • Significant heart disease

  • Restrictive lung disease

  • Incompetent cervix

  • Multiple gestation at risk for premature labor

  • Persistent 2nd or 3rd trimester bleeding

  • Placenta previa after 26 weeks gestation

  • Premature labor during current pregnancy

  • Ruptured membranes

  • Pregnancy induced hypertension

Class Information

San Joaquin Valley Rehabilitation’s Mommy Fitness program is designed to keep class sizes minimum, but enough to have fun with others.

Classes are held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 pm to 6:15 pm.

A prescription from your doctor is required to attend this class. The cost for this class is $42 per month.

Medical Clearance

Please have your OB/GYN or nurse practitioner complete the following:

Your patient is interested in taking part in Aqua Moms or Mommy Fitness as described in this brochure.

Each participant in Aqua Moms will be instructed by aquatic instructors who are first aid/CPR certified and trained in emergency response. Please note that our pool is heated to and maintained at 92°-95°.

For Mommy Fitness each participant will be instructed in basic stabilization and strengthening with the natural progressive resistance of their baby’s body weight.San Joaquin Valley Rehabilitation follows the guidelines of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) for exercise during pregnancy and the postpartum period. If, however, you know of any reason why your patient should not participate in our Aqua Moms aquatic exercise program or Mommy Fitness land program, we would be most grateful if you could indicate the reason below. The following is a list of absolute contraindications for our Aqua Moms program: Significant heart disease; restrictive lung disease; incompetent cervix; multiple gestation at risk for premature labor; persistent 2nd or 3rd trimester bleeding; placenta previa after 26 weeks gestation; premature labor during current pregnancy; ruptured membranes or pregnancy induced hypertension.
