Pulmonary Disease Program

Kentfield provides an inpatient pulmonary disease program for patients with primary or secondary pulmonary diagnoses. With over thirty years experience in critical care medicine, Kip Roebken, MD, has the expertise to manage the most complex disease sequlae. These patients may require ventilator weaning and/or tracheostomy tube decannulation. Kentfield San Francisco’s pulmonary program consistently exceeds benchmarking of similar hospitals, with more patients weaned from ventilators in shorter time frames than predicted.

Neurodiagnostic Ventilator Weaning Program

The Kentfield approach includes:

  • Comprehensive medical supervision by a pulmonologist (respiratory physician) and physiatrist (rehabilitation physician)
  • 24/7 respiratory therapy
  • Reconditioning exercises with specialized therapy team
  • Pharmacological management
  • Dietary consultation
  • Evaluation and training for swallowing problems
  • Psychological support to the patient and family

Kentfield treats patients with the following diagnoses:

  • Acute chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Bronchitis, emphysema, asthma and pneumonia
  • Neuromuscular respiratory paralysis
  • Restrictive lung disease
  • Neurological disorders
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Brain injury

When weaning is not possible, the Kentfield staff train the patient and their families to use portable equipment enabling the patient to live at home.

While the patient is at Kentfield, the Kentfield Case Managers will provide the health plan’s case managers with ongoing reviews of the patient’s progress. Reviews are given once a week unless otherwise requested.

Kentfield’s concurrent review process is focused on insuring the patient receives the appropriate services at the appropriate level of care.
