Speech Pathology focuses on restoring or improving different aspects of communication disorders and swallowing dysfunction that may have resulted from a disease process or trauma. This focus includes but is not limited to strengthening laryngeal elevation and closure, pharyngeal muscles, facial and mouth muscles, and vocal cord adduction to improve and restore speech and swallowing skills. Speech Pathology also includes addressing cognitive- communication impairment and focuses on assisting patients and family members in restoring and coping with impaired memory, attention problems and poor reasoning. Your Speech Pathology Team will also address educational needs that you or your family members may require.
At Highlands, the Speech Pathologist will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your needs, and develop a treatment plan to meet your goals and help you reach the maximum level of independence possible.
