As a physician, Dr. Gary Flannery understands how to take care of himself. This includes maintaining an active lifestyle. Working part-time as a physician in Los Angeles, Dr. Flannery had plenty of time to stay active. "I enjoyed many hobbies such as biking, kayaking, and tennis," he said. "Prior to my hospitalization, I was very healthy and independent."
The events that led to Dr. Flannery's hospitalization began in the summer. "I developed a DVT for the second time," he shared. DVT stands for deep vein thrombosis, which is a blood clot that has formed in a vein deep in the body. "I was started on a medication called Zaralto for my clot. Everything seemed fine until I developed another condition from the medication called gout. I started experiencing a lot of pain and then simultaneously started feeling as if I was developing a sinus infection. I had weakness, a headache, and slurred speech. My son took me immediately to Eisenhower Medical Center, where they did an MRI of my brain."
"I had a stroke."
After several days at Eisenhower, Dr. Flannery's son and physician spoke to him about the next phase of his recovery. They suggested a transfer to Vibra Rehabilitation Hospital of Rancho Mirage. At Vibra, Dr. Flannery would work on his strength, balance, and speech. "They told me it is the best place for me to go and regain my function, so I agreed to try it."
It's a decision Dr. Flannery is pleased he made.
"I feel Vibra has one of the best therapy teams," Dr. Flannery said. "The entire staff was very kind and caring." He credits Dr. Sadeghi with playing a critical role in his recovery. "Dr. Sadeghi was the biggest influence on my recovery. She really took the time to listen to me and genuinely cared about my progress and recovery. She is a fantastic physician!"
For motivation, Dr. Flannery fixed his eyes on resuming his active lifestyle. "A successful recovery, to me, is regaining my function and strength and being able to do activities on my own," he said. "I am very motivated to get back to the hobbies I enjoy. My speech has improved, so I am very happy about that. I will also be getting my boat ready to sell and moving in with my son, for now."Posted By
