“Life before the traumatic brain injury was active and enjoyable. Food is my passion and I love to cook and appreciate eating a variety of different foods.

I had two mechanical falls not far apart from each other that resulted in a subdural hematoma. I suffered loss of function on my left side and was unable to walk, stand, or hold anything. I was living an independent life and could independently perform all daily living activities up until the first fall that preceded the inter cranial hemorrhage. I was admitted to the Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit at Eisenhower Health prior to the closure of the unit and I was discharged home.

I suffered a second mechanical fall and I was readmitted to Eisenhower Health. Upon admission, I was diagnosed with a right-sided hematoma and underwent a craniotomy. Prior to going into surgery, my physician tried to prepare me for all possible outcomes that could include complications. I was scared and said my goodbyes to my wife, children, family and my life.

After my surgery, I had limited mobility and chose Vibra Rehabilitation Hospital of Rancho Mirage because of the recommendation of my neurosurgeon. Our initial goal was to increase left-sided strength and be able to go home.

Immediately after my surgery, I was unable to walk and relied on a wheelchair. With the help of Vibra’s team, I was able to leave the wheelchair behind and ambulate with a front wheel walker, and eventually was able to use a cane and then became fully independent. My overall balance is improved. Now I can walk without any assistive devices.

I was able to go home with physical therapy home health, and I have returned to doing what I am the most passionate about, cooking, barbequing and enjoying delectable meals!

The therapy team would push me to achieve increased mobility, and although it was hard, I never could say no to the team. They were getting me the results that I was afraid I would never achieve and for that, I am grateful! I found that the patient needs to be willing to go along and follow the program in order for your recovery to be a successful. The team worked with me on assistance with activities of daily living, gait training, balance, transfers, safety with mobility that allow me to reach my ultimate goal to go home.

My attitude is what influenced my recovery the most. The nursing staff at Vibra were wonderful and took excellent care of me. Upon arriving at Vibra, Michael G., the RN supervisor, greeted me with a big hug. He remembered us from Eisenhower Health. Michael played a very active role in my recovery. He motivated me and provided amazing nursing care and I would like to thank him.

My family and I would like to thank all the staff at Vibra Rehabilitation Hospital of Rancho Mirage for guiding us through the rehabilitation process and for the emotional support that was provided to us while taking this fear out of a very terrifying time in my life.

In addition to state-of-the-art therapy equipment, we enjoyed the hospitality of the stay and the beautiful amenities of this new hospital. That included our own private room, the therapy courtyard and the picturesque surroundings. The food was also surprisingly good!"
