A busy healthcare professional, Karyn Weber quickly found herself with the tables turned. Sudden onset of right-sided weakness and right facial droop suggested Karyn had suffered a stroke. A visit to the hospital confirmed the diagnosis. After emergency treatment, Karyn chose Gateway Rehabilitation Hospital for the next stage of her recovery.
Karyn arrived at Gateway requiring assistance with mobility, self-care, speech, and walking. A motivated individual, Karyn worked hard during her stay. By discharge, Karyn regained her independence using an assistive device. Her speech returned to normal. Some weakness remained in her right hand, so Karyn continued with the outpatient therapy department at Gateway.
Working with her occupational therapist, Julia Carpenter, Karyn spends three days a week regaining her strength. "If it wasn't for Julia, I would have been lost," Karyn reported. "She's kind and compassionate, patient, and most importantly, she is prepared at every visit! She does this by constantly thinking of creative and out-of-the-box ways to challenge me. Julia is amazing!"
Having made significant improvements, Karyn can now walk independently without the assistive device. She continues to work on regaining full function of her right hand. Karyn has returned to work part-time and runs a small business out of her home.Posted By
