Patient R.A. was admitted to Vibra Specialty Hospital of DeSoto after acute care hospitalization. His medical diagnosis was acute respiratory failure. He presented with a trach requiring mechanical ventilation, esophageal placement of PEG tube, and required hemodialysis.
Over the course of his hospitalization, he was thought to not be weanable from the ventilator. The determination of the patient to return to his prior level of function paired with his strong family support, allowed him to push through and exceed expectations.
Upon initial assessment from all rehab services he required maximum assistance for mobility, maximum assistance for self-care tasks, and he was unsafe to tolerate a diet by mouth. Through his hard work and dedication, he progressed to a regular diet by mouth, no longer required tube feedings, was able to perform mobility-modified independent with use of the rolling walker, and was independent with all self-care tasks.
He was also able to be decannulated and cleared to discharge home with his wife. R.A. is the true definition of a success story, overcoming adversity and exceeding the expectations of us all, his family included. He and his wife were beyond elated with the care and accomplishments made at Vibra Specialty Hospital DeSoto.Posted By
