Michael began feeling left sided weakness and numbness at home but was reluctant to seek medical attention. His symptoms worsened and he eventually was transferred to the hospital, where he fell out of the car in the ER department. He had suffered a stroke in the right side of his brain that was causing severe weakness in the left side of his body.
Michael was really reluctant to come to rehab after his stroke. He has an extensive background in the Marines, including active duty service and his volunteer efforts to serve in the community after his discharge. He thought that he didn’t need our specialized help….until he tried to hold his new granddaughter and was unable to move his left arm to hold her. He had signed out previously against medical advice because he thought he could do it on his own.
After talking to one of our RN Clinical Liaisons Michael decided this was the route he needed to take. He knew he could use the medical oversight by Dr. Mook, the medical director at Gateway Rehabilitation Hospital, who is a specialized rehab doctor, as well as benefit from an intensive therapy program to get better quicker, so Michael decided to give it a shot.
Michael has been with us for a few weeks now and is almost ready to go back home. He said, “ I am so excited that I can hold my grand daughter by myself now! I am so glad that I came to Gateway for my rehab”. “ I have made so much progress since I came here!” Gateway Rehabilitation Hospital, getting you back to better. You can see the excitement and the progress he has made as he holds up that left arm in triumph!Posted By
