Brigitte is a lovely 73-year-old woman with a beautiful German accent. She was admitted to Vibra Hospital on 11/22/16 after a prolonged hospitalization for aortic valve replacement with post-operative respiratory failure and need for intubation and mechanical ventilation. When she arrived at Vibra, she had been weaned from the ventilator but still required oxygen with her trach mask. She was very weak and discouraged, but she was determined.
Physical and occupational therapy evaluated Brigitte on the day of her admission. She needed minimal assistance with bed mobility and transfers, and she could walk 50 feet with a walker and contact guard assistance before needing to rest. With activities of daily living, she needing total assistance. Brigitte worked hard every day in order to be able to return home with her husband. She was soon able to be decannulated and breathe room air. By the time she was to be discharged, she needed only standby assistance with transfers and ambulation over 200 feet with a front wheeled walker. With most daily self care activities, she was modified independent or only needed set-up for supplies.
After only 20 days at Vibra hospital, Brigitte was able to discharge to the rehabilitation floor of a hospital in her hometown to continue her recovery. She was very happy with her therapy and nursing care at Vibra, and before she left, she stated, “I am where I am because of you guys.”
The staff of Vibra Hospital wish her well as she continues to work toward returning home with her husband.Posted By
