Kathleen P.

Kathleen P.

Kathleen arrived at a local emergency room coughing up large amounts of blood and experiencing shortness of breath. Unfortunately, her condition deteriorated and she required intubation. She was also dependent on mechanical ventilation to breathe. Kathleen's care team was unable to wean her from the ventilator. They determined Vibra Hospital of Mahoning Valley would be the best option for her continued care.

Kathleen admitted to Vibra with a diagnosis of respiratory failure, renal failure, and ventilator dependence. Her conditions were further complicated by bleeding from her tracheostomy. During her stay at Vibra, Kathleen required intensive treatment. She was unable to begin weaning from the ventilator for almost a month. But, after receiving the extra time she needed to heal, she was alert, sitting up, and in good spirits. Her care team was now able to begin the weaning process.

Many physicians feared she would never be independent of the ventilator. But Kathleen proved them wrong, weaning from the ventilator successfully. Once liberated from the ventilator, she received physical therapy and began to walk.

Soon, Kathleen discharged to a lower level of care to continue rebuilding her strength before returning home.
