Katie M.

Katie M.

Katie, a 58-year-old female, was admitted to Vibra Hospital of Sacramento after initially reporting to the ER with complaints of shortness of breath, fever, and chills. She was admitted to our hospital with the following diagnoses: bilateral multilobar pneumonia, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) on mechanical ventilator support, critical illness myopathy, acute kidney injury, and sepsis. Katie also presented to Vibra with multiple wounds on her face, likely related to being positioned in a RotoProne bed at the previous hospital to help alleviate her respiratory symptoms.

Upon admission to Vibra, Katie began receiving aggressive Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy, and was working together with Respiratory Therapy to wean from the ventilator. When she arrived, Katie required maximal assist for all mobility, was unable to eat by mouth, and required full support on the ventilator to breathe.

Katie was very motivated and was able to begin getting out of bed to a wheelchair even while still on a ventilator. Throughout her stay at Vibra, Katie was weaned from the ventilator initially to t-mist, and eventually decannulated. Working together with Speech Therapy, Katie was started on a diet and worked on exercises to strengthen her voice. She began working on standing activities and progressed to walking with a walker. By her discharge, Katie was able to get up and out of bed with little assistance, transfer to the wheelchair with the use of a walker, and able to ambulate about 60-70 feet with a walker independently. She was also able to complete activities of daily living independently.

After about 3 weeks at Vibra Hospital of Sacramento, Katie was able to return home to the support of her family. She was discharged home with home health services. We wish her well, and know that she will continue to improve in the comfort of her own home surrounded by family!
