After successfully recovering on my own from having my upper left lung removed due to cancer, I never imagined that rehab would be in my future while getting chemotherapy. Unfortunately, I had a severe reaction to my chemo which landed me in the ICU with Acute Respiratory Disease Syndrome, followed by an undetected stroke, a very severe nosebleed and an ablation on my heart. After 11 weeks of hospitals, I was finally admitted to rehab at Vibra Rehabilitation Hospital of Lake Travis.

When I first arrived I could barely sit on the edge of my bed and even with help, I could only sit for a few seconds. My muscle mass was very small, my right side was very weak due to the stroke and my oxygen needs were high, due to the damage from the ARDS. I needed two people to help me with the simple task of sitting up.

After the first two weeks that I was at Vibra, the excellent staff of nurses and therapists helped me succeed in my goal of being able to stand and walk.  Under the care of Dr. Arizmendez, Dr. Ahmed, and Dr. Ross, everyone there lent a helping hand in achieving my goals. Adding extra help was Stacy in Physical Therapy, Shaina in Occupational Therapy, Charlie, who helped oversee my Respiratory needs, and Jennifer, my case manager who helped line up my needs upon discharge. It was great to work with people who truly care about their patients and they worked hard to help me strive to do my best. Granted, I left using a walker and on oxygen, but I did it! I thank all of those at Vibra for their help! - Lester Harris
