Bill J.

William "Bill" Johnson is a 63-year-old male who came to Vibra Hospital of Northwestern Indiana after a long stay in the ICU at a local short-term acute care hospital.  Bill was diagnosed with tongue cancer and was receiving chemotherapy and radiation therapy.  He developed several complications including severe respiratory failure, sepsis and even required a ventilator to help him breathe.

When Bill arrived at Vibra he was unable to stand, he was disoriented and still required the ventilator to help him breathe.  Our respiratory team, consisting of pulmonologists and respiratory therapists, managed Bill's breathing and worked to wean him off of the ventilator.  Our infectious disease specialists managed Bill's IV antibiotics and our wound care team, consisting of a general surgeon and a certified wound nurse managed Bill's wounds.  Despite all of his challenges, Bill was successfully weaned off of the ventilator and able to breathe on his own.  Soon thereafter, he was able to start eating solid foods again.

When Bill came to us, he was totally dependent on the staff to help him move, even just positioning in bed.  Our therapy team, consisting of physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy was able to work with him to regain his ability to perform daily tasks, such as feeding and grooming himself.  He was able to regain enough strength for standing activities using our parallel bars in the therapy gym.

Today, Bill is able to walk and ride his motorcycle.  He credits his nurse, Tena, and the rest of the nursing staff, for helping him through his journey back to better.  We wish Bill the very best, thank him for entrusting his care to us and welcome him back for visits anytime he wants!
